We were just throwing ideas out. Salad Fingers certainly has a longevity that is rarely seen on the internet. Perhaps the reason for this is that the series has evolved into longer episodes with a more coherent narrative. He has never formally studied art or design but his parents were both art teachers, so growing up in Doncaster, he had a good understanding of art.
These days, creators are finding it harder to survive after YouTube made a series of changes that cut advertising revenue significantly. Firth is now financially supported by his Patreon , which he runs on a per project basis, rather than monthly.
It was in LA, it was really hot. I just went outside in the sun and I was just writing rubbish. It was just as soon as I put my mind to it, weird words came out. So just wrote it all down. Sometimes coffee helps, or exercise, or the right kind of tiredness.
And it does seem like there are always opportunities. I know people, let me talk to them. And they did. And there was some good back and forth. Romaine lettuce fingers. It reminded me of my fondness for David Firth, the creator of Salad Fingers, and his work.
I used to be obsessed with his films in my teens and once had my entire bedroom wall covered in drawings I made in his style of characterization. I tend to position myself as a neutral audience when it comes to consumption, but I really enjoy reading the theories about all of his animations in the comments on his videos — which his fans scrupulously deconstruct every time David has finished a new work. Eventually his creations reached the eyes of one auspicious fan, the musician Flying Lotus, who subsequently called David Firth everyday to receive tutorials in animation software.
How do you know when an idea you have is valuable enough to carry it to the finish line? I have to play it in my head a few times. There have been so many abandoned ideas over the years. Making a video game. I have so many ideas. I used to make crap ones when I was a teenager but I never learned to code properly. It was a choice really. It just turned out I made better cartoons than games so I followed that path.
Your recent personal work explores health. Is there a reason this is coming up now in your art? I might be past that, temporarily. Certain anxieties manifest in my art. Health plots came very easily for a while, just as loneliness plots did before. It just depends on my current state of mind.
So much so that it is overwhelming to even think about. How did you start working with Flying Lotus? He is especially skilled in collecting weirdos. Are you the kind of friend you would want to have as a friend? I need someone with a different set of skills and responsibilities.
Not being dead, but the bit just before.
