As had occurred the season before, Rodgers' summer signings were criticised, particularly Dejan Lovren and Mario Balotelli for failing to improve Liverpool's defence or attack respectively, whilst fellow big money signings Adam Lallana and Lazar Markovic were failing to impact the team at all.
After 10 Premier League matches, Liverpool had already lost four games, compared with the six they lost during the entirety of the prior campaign. Rodgers named a starting XI mostly comprising of his lesser-used players, with the wide-held assumption that Rodgers was resting his key players for the upcoming Premier League clash with Chelsea.
Rodgers defended his selection in what transpired to be a defeat, and although some agreed with the manager's logic, many criticised him for seemingly "giving up" before the game had even begun. Matters did not improve for Rodgers as Liverpool went on to also lose their match against Chelsea.
Liverpool continued to drop points over the coming games, with Rodgers losing the backing of increasing numbers of Liverpool's supporters. Fans were particularly disillusioned with Rodgers' continued selection of players such as Glen Johnson, Dejan Lovren and Steven Gerrard, all of whom were deemed to be consistently underperforming, while the team's defensive woes and lack of attacking prowess that had punctuated their season to date were failing to improve.
In the run up to the Reds' tie with Stoke City on 29 November , Rodgers suggested that he was now 'favourite for the sack,' but affirmed his belief that he would guide the team into the top 4 of the Premier League. Liverpool went on to secure an elusive clean sheet, recording a win in the process- ironically with the much-maligned Glen Johnson scoring the winner.
On 9 December , Rodgers saw his team crash out of the Champions League following a draw with Basel at Anfield, with a win required to seal progression. Liverpool finished third in their group, thus qualifying for the Europa League instead. Five days later, Rodgers made massive changes to his starting line-up, dropping Simon Mignolet for Brad Jones , and moving to three centre-backs, while playing with Raheem Sterling as the lone striker. This did not have the desired effect, and the Reds lost to rivals Manchester United at Old Trafford, with Sterling missing many good chances to score.
Three days later however, they did qualify for the semi-finals of the League Cup, beating Bournemouth away, with Sterling performing much better, and Lazar Markovic scoring his first Liverpool goal.
On 29 December, Liverpool played their best performance of the season, crushing Swansea at Anfield , helped by a brace from Adam Lallana. Rodgers started with Emre Can as one of the three centre-backs, and the German was very impressive in his new role. On 2 January , Liverpool skipper Steven Gerrard announced his intention to leave the club at the end of the season. The captain cited his decreased playing time under Rodgers as one of the big reasons for his departure.
Gerrard started the next game, and scored a brace as Liverpool qualified for the 4th round of the FA Cup, winning at Wimbledon. After much improved performances, Liverpool took on Chelsea at Anfield in the first leg of the League Cup semi-final, and dominated the game despite falling behind early on.
They could however, only manage a draw, with Chelsea goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois putting in an impressive showing. A week later, the Reds lost the second leg at Stamford Bridge, conceding only in extra time. The next game saw the return of Daniel Sturridge , who came on as a substitute to make his first appearance in almost four months.
The striker made an immediate impact, scoring the second in a win over West Ham, the team's third Premier League clean sheet in a row. Needing a red card and a stunning last minute winner from Philippe Coutinho to progress.
On 7 February , Gerrard started in his last Merseyside Derby. Rodgers brought recently recalled youngster, Jordon Ibe in for his first his first start of the season, and he had an almost immediate impact, striking the post with a long range effort. However, they couldn't find a breakthrough and the game ended Three days later, the Reds faced inform Tottenham at Anfield, in a big game between two top four hopefuls. The Reds continued their resurgence in , coming out as winners at Southampton, with Coutinho scoring once again from long range, to open the scoring. On 26 February however, they were knocked out of the Europa League, losing the second leg in Turkey, before being defeated on penalties. On 16 March , Liverpool beat Swansea at the Liberty Stadium, and recorded their sixth Premier League clean sheet away from home in a row, a new club record.
A week later, they faced big rivals Manchester United at Anfield, and Rodgers chose to leave captain Steven Gerrard on the bench. With the Reds performing poorly, being a goal down at half time, Rodgers chose to bring Gerrard on, but the skipper received a red card for stamping on Ander Herrera after just 38 seconds on the pitch. Liverpool went on to lose , with Daniel Sturridge getting a consolation goal.
Martin Skrtel also received a three match ban for a stamp on David De Gea. In the next game, the Reds travelled to the Emirates Stadium, to face Arsenal in a massive game for the club's Champions League hopes.
They ended up in tatters however, as they were crushed , with Henderson getting the only Liverpool goal from the penalty spot, all but ending their hopes of a top four spot. Four days later however, a little hope was injected into the season, as Philippe Coutinho scored the winning goal at Blackburn, to send Liverpool into the semi-final of the FA Cup.
The game was played on 19 April, with Skrtel and Gerrard returning from suspension, but the Reds performed awfully as they were beaten by Aston Villa at Wembley, despite Coutinho opening the scoring. On 16 May , Steven Gerrard started in his last game at Anfield. Liverpool took the lead early on through Adam Lallana , but the Reds suffered an embarrassing defeat. They were on the receiving end of a thrashing as Stoke ran out winners, with Steven Gerrard scoring the only Liverpool goal on his final appearance. This was the first time Liverpool had conceded six goals in a League game in 52 years. This result left many fans demanding that Rodgers be sacked, and one of Rafael Benitez , or Jurgen Klopp take his place.
Despite this, FSG stuck with their man, and according to reports, gave Rodgers more control over the transfers. Jordan Henderson was also announced as club captain, with new signing Milner being named vice-captain. The first league game of the season was a trip back to Stoke, where the Reds were crushed by 6 goals in May.
Despite this, Liverpool struggled to victory in an even game, with Philippe Coutinho scoring an 86th minute screamer to decide the game. The first home game resulted in a win over newly promoted Bournemouth, with Christian Benteke scoring his first goal for the club.
However, the goal should have been ruled out, and a goal for the visitors was wrongly disallowed, resulting in many branding the Reds lucky to win the game. In the next game, Liverpool travelled to Arsenal, and dominated the first half, with Petr Cech being forced to make three fantastic saves. The game ended however, with a wrongly disallowed goal once again going in Liverpool's favour.
In the next game however, the Reds faced West Ham at Anfield, and were crushed by 3 goals to 0, a third big defeat in their past six games. This led to increased scrutiny of Rodgers' tactics, scrutiny which was only enhanced following a defeat to Manchester United, following a dull first half, the Reds were clearly second best in the second half, with their only goal coming from a fantastic overhead kick from Benteke.
Just over a week later, Liverpool suffered to a draw against Norwich at Anfield, with Danny Ings scoring his first goal for the club. At the end of the game, the crowd booed the players off the pitch- a rare sight at Anfield, not seen since Roy Hodgson was in charge. The Reds took the lead through Danny Ings , but quickly lost it after Emre Can gave the ball away to Lukaku in the box.
